Learn everything about the installation and maintenance of your «Long Life» Ag/AgCl reference electrode.

Select whether you wish to begin using the electrode, maintain it, or recover a dried-out reference electrode. Click on the respective section below to open it.

Here you will learn how a new reference electrode is put into operation. The following is required to begin using the reference electrode:

  • Bridge electrolyte depending on the application, e.g., 3 mol/L KCl, 1 mol/L KNO3 (6.2310.010), NaCl solution, or whatever is most suitable for the application

  • Ultrapure water

Please note: After rinsing the reference system with KCl, the electrode needs time to equilibrate. The electrode can still be used but may exhibit a slight potential shift at the beginning.

Filling the new reference system

This video shows how to:

  • Remove the transport container.

  • Open the reference system.

  • Rinse the reference system with c(KCl) = 3 mol/L.

  • Close the reference system.

Please note: Only c(KCl) = 3 mol/L must be used. Other electrolytes will change the reference potential. After rinsing the reference system with KCl, the electrode needs time to equilibrate. The electrode can still be used but may exhibit a slight potential shift at the beginning.

Filling the electrolyte vessel

This video shows how to:

  • Fill the electrolyte vessel with bridge electrolyte.

  • Saturate the diaphragm with electrolyte.

Please note: If KCl and the measuring solution are not compatible, other electrolytes, such as a KNO3 or NaCl solution, can be used as bridge electrolytes.

Assembling the electrode

This video shows how to:

  • Check the reference system before assembly.

  • Check the electrolyte vessel before assembly.

  • Assemble the reference electrode.

When the reference electrode is used for CVS applications, it is recommended to replace the bridge electrolyte every day and maintain the inner reference system every second or third day.

Here you will learn how to maintain your reference electrode. The following is required for the maintenance of the reference electrode:

  • LL-Ag/AgCl reference electrode with electrolyte vessel

  • Bridge electrolyte depending on the application, e.g., 3 mol/L KCl, 1 mol/L KNO3 (6.2310.010), NaCl solution, or whatever is most suitable for the application

  • Syringe with Luer connection (6.2816.020)

  • Ultrapure water

Please note: After rinsing the reference system with KCl, the electrode needs time to equilibrate. The electrode can still be used but may exhibit a slight potential shift at the beginning. Therefore, it is recommended to perform maintenance on the reference system at the end of the working day. Replacement of bridge electrolyte can be done at any time.

Refilling the reference system

This video shows how to:

  • Disassemble the reference electrode.

Replacing the bridge electrolyte

This video shows how to:

  • Empty and rinse the electrolyte vessel.

  • Fill the electrolyte vessel with bridge electrolyte.

Reference electrodes should generally not be allowed to dry out. If it happens anyway, the electrode can often be regenerated.

The following is required for reactivation of the reference electrode:

  • LL-Ag/AgCl reference electrode with electrolyte vessel

  • Bridge electrolyte depending on the application, e.g., 3 mol/L KCl, 1 mol/L KNO3 (6.2310.010), NaCl solution, or whatever is most suitable for the application

  • Ultrapure water

  • Glass beaker

  • Desiccator

  • Vacuum pump, e.g., water aspirator

  • Ultrasonic bath

Please note: After reactivating the reference system, the electrode needs time to equilibrate. Allow at least 6 hours.

Reactivating the reference system

This video shows how to:

  • Disassemble the reference electrode.

  • Open the reference system.

  • Remove KCl crystals.

  • Reactivate the «Long Life» reference system using c(KCl) = 3 mol/L and a desiccator.

  • Close the reference system.

Please note: Only c(KCl) = 3 mol/L must be used. Other electrolytes will change the reference potential.

Reactivating the electrolyte vessel

This video shows how to:

  • Flush out the electrolyte vessel.

  • Remove crystals in an ultrasonic bath.
