Legalization and regulation of medical cannabis by many countries has created a need for rapid quantitative testing of cannabinoids. In a free webinar on November 8, 2022, Dr. Dave van Staveren and Andreas Agerer, both from Metrohm International Headquarters, present how near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be utilized for rapid, non-destructive product screening on various cannabis products, including cannabis oils, waxes, tinctures, and hemp.

While different analytical techniques have been utilized for product screening on cannabis, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is faster and easier to use than established standard techniques (e.g., HPLC): The cannabis matrix can be analyzed as is and accurate results for the concentration of the different cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG) and the moisture content is provided in less than 30 seconds.

Key learning points:

  • General info: Which are the main cannabinoids to test for
  • The principle of NIRS and how this technology is applied to cannabis testing in compliance with 21 FDA CFR Part 11
  • The advantages and limitations of NIRS compared to primary measuring techniques
